Hadrian's Wall Story Centre, Haltwhistle
Northumberland
Competition winning conceptual design for this Heritage destination at Haltwhistle commissioned by One North East, which aims to tell the story of the Principal Sites of Hadrian’s Wall and to equip visitors with the information they need prior to visiting these sites and to transport them to the sites in an eco-friendly manner.
The Story Centre has been conceived as a sculptural meandering hollow wall, coalescing with the landscape, dissecting the site to create spaces that shield the visitor and protect the South Tyne river environment from the road. The story of the Principal Sites is told while the visitor meanders through the hollow wall returning up and over the top of it.
The design of the Story Centre incorporated an entrance hall marking the highest point on the site atop a mound, sequential exhibition rooms, a restaurant, a café’, a retail Street, landscaped gardens with various themes and a pick-up / drop-off point for ‘Hadrian’s Bus”
