Mason's Hill, Woolwich
This project provides 17 residential units for ex-service personnel at Masons Hill, Woolwich, arranged as 1-bed and 2-bed flats.
The practice secured planning permission for this residential scheme for homeless ex-service people in the centre of Woolwich, historically a military garrison town, and went on to develop the project for Douglas Haig Memorial Homes.
The site was formerly public open space with several mature trees and is dominated by the flank elevation of an adjacent synagogue. The design overcomes these challenges by arranging the buildings in a crescent formation, creating a sheltered enclave containing a new landscaped green space for the amenity of new and existing residents. The layout creates a coherent architectural and urban solution incorporating the existing mature trees and reduces the impact of the synagogue elevation.
The practice used this project as a test-bed for exploring alternatives to traditional construction and procurement routes for social housing, including prefabricated construction systems, supply and erect contracts for primary structural elements and increased awareness of environmental issues.
