Chapel Place, Shoebury

Essex

A major acquisition by Gladedale Homes (now Avant Homes), the Shoebury Garrison site is a blend of refurbishment and new build within this large historic walled garrison and arsenal originating from the Napoleanic era. The practice was approached to tackle a particularly difficult infill site between the listed garrison church and listed clock tower of one of the earliest late 18th century phases of the barracks. We achieved a formal solution of terraced houses and stand alone apartment blocks emulating the early military buildings in a modern interpretive style and retaining important vistas to the church and the clocktower.

The proposals were well liked by the local planning authority and consent was finally obtained for the site. The completed scheme sold well and was the winner of a conservation award for good design. Gladedale also then engaged the practice on a larger further phase of development within the garrison.
