Reorganising and extending the ground floor family and home office spaces
The homeowner client, a luxury interior designer, approached us with a brief to alter the ground floor internal layout of their semi-detached Victorian house to improve the flow and function of the living, kitchen and dining areas and to create new home office, shower and utility room spaces.
The house had a narrow footprint, cellular living and family spaces and deep rear closet wing, typical of the Victorian houses in the area. The house sits on a wedge shaped site with an angled boundary along the flank wall of the house.
Side infill extension with contemporary details and flooded with natural light
The side infill extension enabled us to create a home office with independent access from the front elevation, allowing it to function separately from the family house as necessary. The office doubles up as an additional guest bedroom when required, with a compact attached shower room.
Celebrating the Victorian house and contrasting with contemporary alterations
The shape and key original details of the ground floor reception room were largely preserved and then opened out to the rear to create a flow between the family living, kitchen and dining spaces and a connection
A cosy family snug area was formed to the rear of the house. The chimney breast and key period details were retained or replicated in this room and the floor level raised to create a step free level to the whole ground floor.
Detailed design and specification developed with the Interior Designer Client
We worked with our client, a luxury interior designer, to develop the detailed design and specification to dovetail with her vision for the interior finishes and fixtures of the house.
Key design elements included the high quality steel frame external windows and doors and careful coordination of the fixtures and fittings of the kitchen, utility and shower rooms to maximise the use of all of the available space.
