New Build Home, Kensington and Chelsea

New build contemporary 5 bed house in the Cheyne Conservation Area.

A contemporary house designed to blend in to its historic surroundings

Haines Phillips achieved Planning and Conservation area consents for the demolition of an existing house and the erection of a new 5 bedroom house in the Cheyne Conservation Area, SW3.

The building mass is strongly modelled with changes of plane, deep roof overhangs and projecting bay windows characteristic of residential properties in the area. Dark brick and pale timber cladding is designed to allow the buildings to recede within the fine landscape setting of the site.

The elevations were conceived to blend in harmoniously with the surrounding buildings, a mixture of brick and stucco render façade townhouses. The internal layout, with an area of 3,150 square feet, was developed to maximise light and usable space in the narrow plot.

Light filled basement living spaces

The kitchen, dining and living spaces are inserted below the existing rear garden in a new basement.

Light is provided via large walk-on rooflights in the floor of the garden patio above.

Our design included the rear garden landscaping which is based around a flexible patio space and a simple, low maintenance series of planting and seating areas.

Sensitive negotiations with the Conservation officers were needed also in connection with the removal of a London Plane tree in the adjoining garden.

We worked closely in conjunction with the interior designers Bahlly Luxury Living to develop the design, specification and detail of the contemporary interior fit-out, using a restrained palette of luxurious materials, fittings and fixtures.

Location

The development is located in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, London.
