Having decided to carry out a substantial renovation, we knew that we needed help to translate our thoughts into a working proposition and to find and oversee builders who would deliver. Having listened to what we wanted to do, Maha Phillips of Haines Phillips Architects, came up with a simple but clever idea that achieved the desired outcome. Ably supported by Paul Lofthouse, that was turned into plans, tenders and regulatory permissions which resulted in the appointment of a builder they recommended, who delivered an excellent outcome in an efficient and timely fashion, despite all the challenges of the circumstances at the time.

After living in our property for almost 10 years we decided to embark on an extensive amalgamation and renovation journey. We appointed Haines Phillips to help us translate our thoughts into plans and with securing planning permission. We discussed several concepts with Mike Phillips in the early stages of the project and soon had the pleasure of working with Paul Lofthouse. Paul was able to translate our thoughts and mood boards into detailed plans which helped secure planning permission, and he helped to communicate our exacting standards to the contractors. He really understood our brief and obsessed about volumes, design details and symmetry, all of which helped to cement our confidence that we had appointed the right architects. By the end of the project, Paul knew the answers to questions even before we had had the time to articulate them ourselves. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Paul whose talent, calm but fir m demeanour, resilience and general kindness have made a long and complicated project enjoyable. And the best outcome of all is that what we had imagined as our dream home is exactly what was delivered. We couldn't be prouder and happier with the results.

We asked Haines Phillips to design something within a fixed moderately large budget that would help transform our home into something that was well designed and future proofed as our young family grew older into adulthood. What they produced was not only amazing from a design perspective but also financially affordable. The new kitchen/ living area has transformed the way we live as a family. They designed the space so that while being open plan still allowed for different zones giving the feeling of comfort and privacy. They also helped us take a huge leap into design that we could never have imagined, leaving us with a double height space that takes your breath away. In order for this to happen both Mike and Maha were patient and supportive providing us with very clear design briefs and 3D computer designs along the way. This included lighting and electric plans which we would never have considered so well worth the investment as they quite literally make the space. They were professional at every step and this included all the planning meetings with professionals as well as neighbours. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others and would definitely instruct them again on any future projects.

I have worked with Haines Phillips on a number of residential projects both as a co-professional in my capacity as an interior designer, and also as a client. As a Practice they have that rare ability to combine both interesting architecture and design with great practicality. I instructed them on a development for 6 new flats above a commercial space which they have taken from the design and planning stages and through to the project management and administration of the contract.
